Pool Time

by Kate Peterson

It was finally warm enough to go in the pool last weekend. In the past my little man loved hanging out in his floatie, but now all he wants to do is JUMP in the pool. It's getting a bit exhausting as I have to catch the little guy.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good floatation devices that WORK for kids who like to jump in the pool? He's 20 months old and a peanut - only about 21 pounds.

Be wary of the tubes that go around the kid's hips.... I worked as a lifeguard for 4 years and saw more than one kid lean over too much on a jump, and end up upside down with their feet just flailing.

I would go with the "learn to swim vest" that helps kids learn to float. It like a jacket (I think they even make full suits now) that has floats in strategic areas to mimic the areas of the body that actually make people float. That way kids learn the motions at an early age and learn to swim quicker.

It actually does help quite a bit... (I taught swimming lessons for those 4 years as well)
